What the Codice Fiscale is
The Codice Fiscale is the Italian tax identification code used across many administrative processes. It is not a visa and it is not a residence permit. For students, it can appear in rental paperwork, university administration, banking, healthcare and utilities.
Do you need it to rent?
There is no useful reason to treat the answer as a universal yes/no at the listing stage: individual agencies and landlords have different workflows. In practice, many rental processes require the tenant’s Codice Fiscale before the contract can be completed and registered, so international students benefit from obtaining it early.
Official ways to request one
The Italian Revenue Agency explains that individuals can request a tax code using form AA4/8 with identification documentation. The Agency also states that the form can be sent to an office by email or certified email, or submitted in person. Students abroad may also have consular routes depending on their circumstances.
- Use only the code officially assigned by the Italian tax administration
- Keep the certificate or official confirmation in a secure PDF
- Check that your name, date and place of birth are correct
- Do not rely on online “code generators” as proof of official assignment
Why timing matters for housing
If you wait until you have found the apartment, the Codice Fiscale can become one more dependency in a fast-moving rental process. If you are planning to move to Milan, add it to your pre-arrival checklist instead of treating it as an emergency document.
FAQ
Can I calculate a Codice Fiscale online?
Websites can reproduce the calculation logic, but that is not the same as official assignment by the Italian tax administration.
Can I request it by email?
The Revenue Agency states that the AA4/8 form and required identity documentation can be sent to an office by email or PEC, subject to the official procedure.
Is it the same as the Tessera Sanitaria?
No. The tax code is the identifier; the health card is a separate document/service that uses the tax code.
Should I obtain it before arriving?
If your situation allows it, obtaining it early can remove friction from housing and other administrative steps.
