Start with a realistic apartment brief
“A nice apartment in Milan” is not a useful search brief. A strong brief defines the maximum monthly budget, university, preferred commute, move-in date, number of bedrooms, floor preferences, lift, furnishing and contract length.
Studio
Best for privacy and simplicity, but studios attract strong demand and often carry a higher price per square metre.
One-bedroom apartment
Useful for one student or a couple who want a separate sleeping area and more living space.
Two+ bedroom apartment
Can work well for friends sharing, but check whether the landlord accepts multiple students and how the contract is structured.
What to check beyond the listing photos
- Natural light and actual room sizes
- Street and building noise
- Heating and air conditioning
- Condition of kitchen and bathrooms
- Lift and floor level
- Furniture included in the tenancy
- Public-transport access
- Whether the advertised price includes condominium expenses or utilities
Upfront costs: ask before the viewing
The monthly rent is only one part of the move-in budget. Depending on the property, you may also face condominium charges, utilities, a security deposit, agency commission and sometimes rent paid in advance. Ask for the complete cost structure before investing time in a viewing.
If a landlord asks for a large upfront amount, make sure you understand what each component represents and that the payment terms are written into the rental documentation.
Searching from abroad
Remote search is where international students are most exposed to uncertainty. A listing may look perfect online but still have practical issues that photos do not show. For selected properties, a local viewing can help verify the condition, building, surrounding street and whether the layout matches your expectations.

FAQ
Can parents act as guarantors?
Some landlords and agencies accept parental guarantees, while others use different financial criteria. Ask early because the answer can determine whether a property is realistic for you.
Are student apartments usually furnished?
Many are, but not all. Check the inventory carefully and confirm what stays in the apartment.
Can two or three students sign together?
Potentially, depending on the landlord and contract. The arrangement should be clarified before an offer is made.
Can Milos visit an apartment before I arrive?
For selected properties and subject to the service terms, yes. The goal is to give you better local information before you decide.
